How do I renew an ILL?

  • To Renew your Interlibrary Loans:
    • Log into your ILLiad account
    • Choose "Checked Out Items" from the "View" menu
    • Select the transaction number of the item you want to renew
    • In the upper left-hand corner, select "Request Renewal"
    • This renewal request will be communicated to the ILL Office, even if you read a notice that states that no further renewals are allowed [This statement is because 2nd and 3rd renewals are not allowed]
    • ILL will contact the lender, who will either approve or deny the renewal request
  • Your responsibilities are:
    • Check the transaction for the new due date
    • Check your email regularly to see if the renewal request was approved or denied. If it is approved, you may have a different due date, so take note of that in the email(Back)

What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad can be thought of as an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database. (Back)

Which delivery location should I choose?
WVU Libraries has three interlibrary loan offices that are using ILLiad (Downtown Campus, Evansdale and Health Sciences). Each is responsible for processing the interlibrary loan requests submitted by their users. When registering with ILLiad, you must choose one of these offices. You should select the library you use most frequently or where you want to pick up your interlibrary loan requests. The office you select is the only interlibrary loan office that can offer assistance or answer questions about your ILLiad account. (Back)

What about Distance Education and Rural Rotation students?
Distance Education Please do not choose the status "Distance Ed" unless you are currently enrolled in at least one class that uses non-traditional transmission methods (such as two way interactive video, satellite, television and the world wide web) to make its course offerings available OR a course that is offered by WVU Morgantown at a remote location. Additionally, you must reside outside of a 25-mile radius from Morgantown. If you live or attend classes in the Morgantown area, you are not generally considered a Distance Education student. Extension service faculty are considered Distance Education, except for the office in Monongalia County.

Distance Education students must choose the status "Distance Ed" and the InterLibrary Loan Processing Unit "Downtown Campus Library".

Rural Rotation Please do not choose the status "Rural Rotation" unless you are currently out on Clinical Rotation. Rural Rotation students are those students in the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy who are out on Clinical Rotations at various West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships sites throughout the state.

Coordinators from the Schools provide the Health Sciences Library with the names of those students currently out on rotation. A student's name must appear on these lists before the HSL sends articles since we provide the service free of charge.

Rural Rotation students must choose the status "Rural Rotation" and the InterLibrary Loan Processing Unit "Health Sciences Library". (Back)

Why do I need a username and password to use ILLiad?
Your username and password allows us to give you secure access to information about your interlibrary loan requests. We can also enable you to edit your personal information such as your address or phone number.

Your username can be anything you like, such as your name, abbreviations, or an alphanumeric code. Your password also can be anything you like. We recommend that you follow good security practice and choose a password that is different from those you use to access other systems. However, no one but you will know your password, not even the library staff. The password you set is stored in an encrypted file. (Back)

Is security a problem if I use a public workstation?
Yes. Web browsers cache information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests, you can take the following steps:

  • Access ILLiad only from your personal computer or an otherwise secure workstation.
  • Access ILLiad from a public workstation in the Interlibrary Loan office in the library. These computers are supervised by the library staff.
  • When using a public access workstation:
    1. Delete from the history file those pages that contain your personal information.
    2. Exit from the Web browser before you leave the workstation. This prevents the Back button from accessing the pages you were using. (Back)

What is a rush request?

How much does it cost to use Interlibrary Loan?
ILL is a service we offer to our students, faculty and staff, so we do not charge for interlibrary loans. The WVU Libraries often have to pay to obtain items through ILL, but we absorb this cost, rather than passing it along to the you. However, we do charge a service fee of $10.00 for ILL requests that are requested but never picked up. (Back)

Why was I disavowed?

Why is my ILLiad account blocked?
ILLiad users are blocked when they owe fines or have not returned ILL books. When you are blocked, you cannot access your ILLiad accound to request materials, view articles, place renewals or check the status of any items you currently hold. To get specific information on your account, call the ILL office of the library where you pick-up your materials: Downtown, 293-4040 x4650; Evansdale 293-4696 x5107; Health Sciences 293-1930. (Back)

Why is the status of my ILLiad request "Finished"?
There may be a couple reasons you're getting this message. It could be that we received your article on paper and it is being sent through the US mail to your address. When we mail the item out, the ILLiad system updates the record to "Finished". Another reason could be that the requested item is owned by the WVU Libraries and the ILL unit may have forwarded your request to Book Express or the Depository. (Back)

Are ILL/ILLiad and E-ZBorrow the same service?
No.
ILL/ILLiad borrows materials and obtains journal articles from around the world. E-ZBorrow obtains books only (no journal articles) from academic libraries in Pennsylvania. (Back)

What if I can't see my article?

If you can read the sample page, then your computer has the necessary software installed to work with your Web browser. However, if your computer tells you the file type is unknown and asks if you want to save the file to disk, then you need to install the Adobe Acrobat software. (Back)
